Puerto Vallarta, Mexico | Casa Cupula
Boutique hotels don't get much boutiquier than the charming 19-room Casa Cupula. Coincidentally located mere steps from my favorite Puerto Vallarta vacation rental, Villa Rosa, this gay-owned property welcomes any LGBT-friendly adult over 18, but primarily attracts a clientele of gay men. In January 2018, the hotel celebrated its own quinceañera (15-year birthday), so they have experience making people's stays incredible.
Despite its small size, the property has a full-service collection of amenities, including an on-site restaurant (offering room service), a well-equipped fitness center, a cozy spa (as well as in-room treatments), and great views from sunrise to well after sunset. The friendly atmosphere encourages guests to mingle and make new friends from all over the world. Because some of the best memories you make happen with someone who started out as a perfect stranger. 5 Reasons to Visit Casa Cupula
Three Pools
The villa pool at Casa Cupula features a full-service bar, pool snacks and one important differentiator over the other two on-property splash zones—this one's for men only. Therefore, it's a clothing optional safe space that on any given day has about a half-and-half mix between naked guys and those in swimsuits. The other two pools welcome women and feature slightly different views of the city below and the majestic Banderas Bay. |
On-site Spa & Gym
Truth be told, my partner and I have never used the gym at this property (or any in Puerto Vallarta for that matter) because we usually get in close to 20,000 steps a day simply walking around town and back and forth to the beach. But for those wanting to keep their muscles in tip-top buffness, you'll find everything you need, including personal trainers. In the small spa, unwind with a massage, time in the steam room or jacuzzi. Or enjoy a massage in the privacy of your own room. |
Spacious Suites
Of the 19 rooms, eight are suites with different decor and amenities, including two new ones: a suite dedicated to Frida Kahlo and the newest, 1,200-square-foot Bella Vista Suite with a full kitchen, terrace with BBQ grill, and Jacuzzi in the bathroom. The 1,500-square-foot Penthouse Suite features a terrace with private dipping pool, outdoor shower and Jacuzzi. However, even the more modestly sized rooms deliver plenty of bang for the buck with rates from $100 US depending on the season. |
Theme Parties
Not to worry, this isn't a party-all-the-time spot, but Casa Cupula does host regular parties, especially during high season when LGBT visitors from all over town come to join in on a little fun in the sun (or fun in the moonlight). During Pride, events happen a little more frequently, so whether you're looking for festive fiestas aplenty or a more quiet stay, I suggest checking out the event calendar before your stay. Or e-mail the talented concierge for advice on finding the right vibe for your vacation. |
Dogs Welcome
I can't imagine trying to travel with my dogs to Mexico (or anywhere by plane for that matter), but dogs are welcome. Check with the hotel for the latest pet policy. What's really cool, though, if you're a dog lover and not traveling with Rover, Fido or Fifi, the staff brings two dogs to the property almost daily so you can get a healthy dose of doggie kisses and belly rubs (you rubbing the dog, not the other way around). |
